Edo period kura ,saddle 1603/1868

This is a magnificent Mizuhiki kura.A hand applied gold nashiji laquer with natural aging.Hand carved Yotsume mon, four diamond crest within a circle.This crest marks and the details show a saddle used by a daimyo or high-ranking samurai during the Tokugawa shogunate.

The entire frame is covered in gold nashiji a complicated technique creating thiny golden specks resembling pear skin .Traditionaly made in wood with tenon and mortese .

The kura is decorated with sakura cherry blossom maki-e;Symbolizing the samurai ideal of beauty in the fleeting moment of falling petals.

Under the seat the frame bears two seals stamped into the wood.These monogram seals were applied by the master craftman and /or commissioning daimyo. The dual stamps confirm workshop authenticity and add documented provenance.
